After a 30 year academic career in Anthropology, I took early retirement so that I could pursue fine art full time. I am a self-taught oil painter, an active member of the California Art Club and a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists. My primary focus is on maritime-historical subjects, particularly on the West Coast where I live, and on the Great Lakes where I was raised.
I participate in the annual maritime art exhibit at Coos Bay, Oregon, and have been accepted three times into the Mystic Seaport International Maritime Exhibit. I was first place winner in oils and acrylics in the 2005 international show of the Washington D.C. Society of Miniature Artists, Sculptures and Gravers.
Perhaps from my background in Anthropology I believe that artists who can work in more than one style or medium are like people who can express themselves in more than one language. Thus my work ranges from historically accurate and relatively “tight” marine and southwest paintings to quite impressionistic plein air pieces; from large seascapes to extremely detailed miniatures.
